Principal Investigator: Samuel K. Sia, Ph.D.
Samuel Sia is an Assistant Professor at Columbia BME. He obtained his B.S. at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, working on bioanalytical techniques (with Norm Dovichi) and protein structural biology (with Michael James and Brian Sykes). Samuel then obtained his Ph.D. at Harvard University with Peter Kim (located at MIT and the Whitehead Institute); his thesis examined the use of protein design to improve the structural properties of anti-HIV peptide inhibitors (such as the first FDA-approved class of fusion inhibitors against HIV). As a postdoctoral fellow with George Whitesides at Harvard, Samuel worked on a number of projects at the interface of materials science and biology, with a focus on developing simple but powerful microfluidic techniques for biomolecular detection (for tackling global health problems, among other uses), and methods for studying cells in microfabricated systems.
