05/27/2009
Five BME students have been awarded NSF graduate research fellowship this year. They include current BME senior, Amandine Goldier, who will be pursuing her doctoral studies with Professor Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic. Her research project is entitled "Controlled assembly of myocardium: engineering functional tissue replacements". Lauren Grosberg is mentored by Professor Elizabeth Hillman, and her thesis will focus on "Characterization of hyperspectral microscopy for 3D histology". Michael Lamprecht has been pursuing his doctoral studies with Professor Barclay Morrison, and his project title is "Utilizing dual sensing carbon nanofiber electrode arrays to model the effect of astrocytes on long term potentiation". Siddarth Subramony is mentored by Professor Helen H. Lu, and his thesis project will focus on the "Design of biomimetic scaffolds for Integrated Ligament Tissue Engineering". Finally, in addition to the NSF Graduate fellowship, incoming doctoral student Sarah DeLeo, who will join Professor Elizabeth Hillman's research group, received a two-year IGERT fellowship from Columbia, and her thesis will investigate "Optical techniques for actuation, sensing, and imaging of biological systems".
Two BME doctoral students also won fellowships from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) this year: Molly Flexman, mentored by Professor Andreas Hielscher, is researching the "Design of a digital optical tomography system for dynamic breast imaging", while Jean Provost, mentored by Professor Elisa Konofagou, is investigating the "Electromechanical wave imaging for the detection of heart disease"
In addition, several BME students received honorable mentions in this year's NSF fellowship competition: David Jangraw, who is working with Professor Paul Sajda, and Michael Khalil, who is mentored by Professor Andreas Hielscher. Philip Chung, a graduate student from the Material Science and Engineering program who is pursuing doctoral studies with Professor Helen H. Lu, also received honorable mention.
