Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Engineering
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University offers both graduate and ABET-accredited undergraduate programs. Our Department is also home to world-class researchers in the fields of cell and tissue engineering, biomechanics, and biomedical imaging. Our main office is located in the Engineering Terrace in the northeast corner of the Morningside Heights campus, although we occupy teaching and research space on both the Morningside Heights and Columbia Medical School campuses.

Kenneth W. Ng, first Yuen-huo Hung & Chao-chin Huang Awardee
Dr. Kenneth W. Ng was awarded the first Yuen-huo Hung & Chao-chin Huang Award in Biomedical Engineering given to a graduating doctoral student who embodies the collective attributes of these distinguished individuals.
Collagen Aids in Tissue Engineering
Professor Sia and graduate student Brian M. Gillette demonstrate that collagen fibers, a natural biomaterial that is a prevalent structural component in the organs of our body, can be used to anchor together soft tissues that are engineered in the laboratory.
Prof Hillman wins $1.6M from NIH for brain research
Dr Hillman’s research focuses on using light to measure the function and structure of living tissues. The funded project aims to develop and utilize advanced optical imaging tools to better understand how the brain works.
