Mission: RespoRite was created in September 2007 by four seniors majoring in Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University. As part of our senior design project, we decided to address medical needs of the developing world. After preliminary research, we decided to focus on designing a medical device used to treat neonatal respiratory complications, which could be used to save many infant lives. According to the United Nations, 166 per 1000 children in Africa die before they turn five, and many die due to respiratory complications (such as Respiratory Distress Syndrome, or bronchopulmonary dysplasia). Resporite focuses on helping relieve this problem by creating a neonatal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device specifically designed for the developing world that will require minimal funds, training, and maintenance. |
