BME Seminar: Aaron Batista, Ph.D., University of Pittsburgh
On Friday, October 22nd @ 11:00AM ET, we welcome Prof. Aaron Batista from the University of Pittsburgh as he presents, "Memory and Motivation in Motor Cortex."
ABOUT THE SEMINAR
Memory and Motivation in Motor Cortex
Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) hold great promise to restore motor function to individuals with paralysis. The more we can understand about the function of the primary motor cortex (M1), the better we can make the performance of clinical BCI systems. M1 plays a crucial role in specifying the details of impending actions, but in addition, M1 also carries signals related to the memory of motor skills, and the context in which behavior is occurring, including the motivational valence of impending actions. We are examining how these variegated signals interact, and are kept separate, in the activity of populations of M1 neurons. The implications of this diversity of signals present in M1 for clinical BCI systems will also be discussed.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Aaron Batista, Ph.D., Professor of Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh
Aaron Batista is a professor of bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. His research examines the neural population mechanisms of sensory-motor coordination, with implications for clinical neural prosthetics. Aaron earned undergraduate degrees in computer science and philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania, a PhD in Computation and Neural Systems at the California Institute of Technology, and pursued postdoctoral research with Krishna Shenoy and Bill Newsome at Stanford University. Prior to starting graduate school, Aaron conducted a summer research project at Columbia with Ning Qian, and that project helped him clarify his interests in the neural mechanisms of sensory-motor coordination.
