COLUMBIA BME VAN C. MOW LECTURE: Edward Chang, Ph.D., UCSF
On Friday, September 17th @ 11:00AM ET, we welcome Joan and Sanford Weill Chair and Jeanne Robertson Distinguished Professor of Neurological Surgery, Edward Chang, from the University of California, San Francisco as he presents our distinguished Van C. Mow Lecture, "Restoring Words with a Speech Neuroprosthesis."
ABOUT THE SEMINAR
Restoring Words with a Speech Neuroprosthesis
In recent years, we have made significant advances in understanding how speech, a unique and defining human behavior, is processed by the cerebral cortex. We will review new scientific knowledge on how the brain represents vocal tract movements to give rise to all consonants and vowels, and how this knowledge has been applied to development of a “speech neuroprosthesis” to restore communication for people living with paralysis.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Edward Chang, Ph.D., Joan and Sanford Weill Chair and Jeanne Robertson Distinguished Professor of Neurological Surgery, University of California, San Francisco
Dr. Chang’s clinical expertise is surgical therapies for epilepsy, brain tumors, and cranial nerve disorders. He specializes in advanced neurophysiologic brain mapping methods, including awake speech and motor mapping, to safely perform neurosurgical procedures in eloquent areas of the brain. Dr. Chang’s laboratory has demonstrated the detailed functional organization of the human speech cortex and has translated those discoveries towards the development of a speech neuroprosthetic device to restore communication for people living with paralysis. Dr. Chang is the 2015 Blavatnik National Laureate in Life Sciences was inducted to the National Academy of Medicine in 2020. He co-directs the Center for Neural Engineering and Prostheses at UC Berkeley and UCSF.
