BME Graduate Student wins ASBMR Most Outstanding Abstract Award

PhD candidate Genevieve Brown recently received the 2016 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) Most Outstanding Basic Abstract Award. The abstract, “Mechanically-Induced Calcium Oscillations in Osteocytes Facilitate Release of RANKL, OPG, and Sclerostin Through Extracellular Vesicles and Mediate Skeletal Adaptation” was chosen as the highest ranking basic science abstract out of 3,000 abstracts submitted to ASBMR. The abstract was co-authored by PhD candidates Andrea Morrell, Samuel Robinson, and Rachel Sattler, as well as the director of the Bone Bioengineering Laboratory, Professor X. Edward Guo. The research suggests that osteocytes respond to mechanical loading by releasing extracellular vesicles that contain proteins vital to bone adaptation.

ASBMR was established in 1977 to promote and support bone and mineral research and its translation into clinical practice. The award includes a $1,500 honorarium.
