Outstanding BME Students Honored – 2022

On May 16, 2022, Columbia Engineering students, deans, faculty, staff, parents, friends, and alumni gathered in person for Class Day to celebrate the accomplishments of outstanding students. Among the honorees were three undergraduate and four graduate students in Biomedical Engineering.

Today, we also honor twenty undergraduate senior designers who placed in the top four teams at Columbia BME's Senior Celebration on May 14, as well as twelve MS student designers who placed in the top two teams at the MS Biomedical Design & Innovation Awards on May 5.

 

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT CLASS DAY AWARDS
 

Özgenur Çelik: King’s Crown Leadership & Excellence Award: Health & Wellness (University level award)

King's Crown Leadership Excellence Awards recognize the significant contributions of Columbia College and Columbia Engineering students to the Columbia community. Health & Wellness: Recipients of this award best exemplify the spirit of caring for and about the members of our vast and diverse community. A special focus is placed on the individual/group’s ability to establish an example for a healthy balance of responsibilities, duties, and activities through their own leadership.

 

Hannah Ballard: Claire S. and Robert E. Reiss Prize

This award is given by Robert E. Reiss, B.S. '66, and his wife, Claire S. Reiss to the graduating senior(s) in biomedical engineering judged by the faculty of the program as most likely to contribute substantially to the field.

 

Amy MiHyun Jang: Richard Skalak Memorial Prize       

The Richard Skalak Memorial Prize was founded in recognition of the pioneering contributions of Richard Skalak to the development of the biomedical engineering program at Columbia University. Dr. Skalak was an inspirational teacher and scholar who taught students and colleagues to appreciate the value of broad interactions between engineering and medicine, particularly in the fields of cardiovascular mechanics, tissue engineering, and orthopedics. The Richard Skalak Memorial Prize is awarded annually to a senior biomedical engineering student who exemplifies the qualities of oustanding engineering scholarship and breadth of scientific curiosity that form the basis for lifelong learning and discovery.

 

GRADUATE STUDENT CLASS DAY AWARDS
 

Timothy Jacobsen & Meghan Pinezich: Yuen-huo Hung and Chao-chin Huang Award in Biomedical Engineering (“The Grandparents’ Award”)

Given to graduate doctoral students who have demonstrated potential for making significant contributions to the fields of biomedical engineering and public health, and for serving as ambassadors of biomedical engineering.

 

Kaveri Thakoor: Morton B. Friedman Memorial Prize for Excellence (School level award)            

Morton B. Friedman was a visionary in the vanguard of engineering education through his lifelong service as professor, department chair, and senior vice dean. Awarded periodically to an undergraduate or graduate student who best exhibits Dean's Friedman's characteristics of academic excellence, visionary leadership, and outstanding promise for the future.

 

Mona Ziaei: Outstanding Achievement Award in Biomedical Engineering Master's Studies

The Outstanding Achievement Award in Biomedical Engineering Master's Studies is given to a Master of Science (MS) student in biomedical engineering who best exhibits academic excellence, visionary leadership, and outstanding promise for the future of innovation and engineering in medicine.
