Ke Cheng, Alan L. Kaganov Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Professor of Medical
Science (in Medicine) at Columbia University, has been elected a Foreign Fellow of Academia
Europaea — also known as the Academy of Europe. Established in 1988, the academy comprises
more than 4,000 individual members across all academic disciplines, selected through rigorous
international peer review. Election to Academia Europaea is among the highest honors conferred
upon scholars worldwide.

Professor Cheng is internationally recognized for his research in nanobiotechnology and
regenerative medicine, with a focus on engineering extracellular vesicles, lipid nanoparticles, and
biomaterial-based carriers for the treatment of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and oncological
diseases. His group has pioneered inhalable exosome therapeutics, exosome-eluting stents, and
RNA nanomedicine platforms, with several technologies currently in clinical trials. He has
published more than 275 peer-reviewed papers with over 23,000 citations and an H-index of 90.

“This recognition reflects the extraordinary work of my students, postdocs, and collaborators,”
said Professor Cheng. “It is a great honor to be welcomed into this distinguished community of
European and international scholars.”

Professor Cheng joined Columbia’s Department of Biomedical Engineering in 2023. He is also
an elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the
Biomedical Engineering Society, and the American Heart Association, and a Foreign Member of
the French National Academy of Medicine. He previously held an endowed chair at NC State
University, with a joint appointment at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
