About the Department

Bridging engineering and medicine to drive discovery for a healthier world. As innovators, the Department of Biomedical Engineering makes significant contributions in both science and medicine. From the lab to life, our students, faculty and staff are engineering the future of medicine.

Biomedical engineering is an evolving discipline that draws on collaboration among engineers, physicians and scientists to provide interdisciplinary insight into medical and biological challenges. The field has developed its own body of knowledge and core principles that form the foundation of the academic programs offered by the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University.

Courses

Courses offered by the Department of Biomedical Engineering are complemented by offerings from other departments within The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, as well as from the Faculty of Medicine, the College of Dental Medicine, the Mailman School of Public Health and the science departments within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
